ART AROUND TOWN…

“Winter is the perfect time to put on canvas and paper all the interesting and beautiful images I find during my time on the island during the spring, summer and fall,” saysSharon Lehman about her new exhibition opening Saturday, July 16. Lehman’s real excitement comes from walking on trails, finding treasures washed up on the beach, ordiscovering an old, historic house off the beaten path.Everywhere Lehman goes on Block Island she sees something she wants to paint. “When I first saw the island it was still somewhat undeveloped and I wandered around empty fields, sparsely-populated beaches and woodland trails. Each turn revealed something interesting or exciting,” she says. Her favorite finds include a 1940s-era carcompletely overgrown with weeds and vines and empty houses that looked as if the owners got up after dinner and walked out, never to return. Those images, along with the over-one-hundred-year-old former boarding house she lives in, contributed to many of her early paintings.Lehman’s new works include some of her recent experimentation with palette knife and oil paint as well as both small and larger format canvases reflecting her great love and artistic interpretation of the island.Everyone is invited to the opening party on
