At 7 p.m. on August 11, BIMI’s second Tuesday Talk of the 2020 season features Don Murphy, chief scientist (ret.) of the USCG’s International Ice Patrol: For the Purpose of Safeguarding Lives and Property at Sea.
Shortly after the sinking of the RMS Titanic the major shipping nations of the world agreed that a patrol should be established to track icebergs near the shipping lanes in the North Atlantic and warn mariners of the location of dangerous icebergs. Over IIP’s fascinating 100+ year history the methods of conducting the mission have changed dramatically.
To attend this live online talk, you must register on BIMI’s website, www.blockislandmaritime.org.
As always, BIMI’s Tuesday Talks are free, with donations appreciated (there is a DONATE button at the top right of the event page). Any amount to support our mission is greatly appreciated!
