Dr. Lindsay Green-Gavrielidis will be the Block Island Maritime Institute’s Tuesday Night Talks guest speaker on July 19 at 7 p.m.Green-Gavrielidis grew up in the mountains of New Hampshire and had a deep fascination with the ocean from a young age. She received her BS in Biology from Northeastern University and worked as an intern at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on harmful algal blooms. She then went on to obtain a MS in Marine Biology (Northeastern University) and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of New Hampshire. Her research during that time focused on kelp forest ecology and seaweed aquaculture. Lindsay then went on to work at the University of Rhode Island where she collaborated with scientists and industry partners on a range of research topics including sustainable aquaculture, the ecology of seaweed blooms, the impacts of introduced/non-native species on native faunas and floras, and changes in habitat-forming seaweed communities. In 2019, Lindsay joined Salve Regina University as an Assistant Professor where she combines her love of seaweeds with her dedication to inclusive teaching.Seaweed aquaculture is an enormous global industry with over 31 million tons wet weight produced worldwide in 2018.
