Block Island Annual Holiday Stroll put on hold

The Block Island Town Council, after a lengthy discussion during its meeting last night, voted to put a pause this year on the annual Holiday Stroll. While some stores on the island will be open throughout the holiday season, the goal is to discourage visitors from traveling from the mainland and encourage island residents to shop locally due to the fact there are rising Covid-19 numbers on the mainland and an uptick on the island. The Holiday Stroll has traditionally taken place on the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Interstate Navigation has also cancelled running the fast ferry, which for the past few years has run during the stroll, and is implementing stricter safety and health protocols on the traditional ferries.

The Council emphasized that, while stores will be open and island residents are encouraged to shop, mask wearing and physical distancing will be strongly encouraged.

This is a developing story. See more online at blockislandtimes.com later today and in The Block Island Times on Friday.
