Block Island Club to host Hal Madison Race August 20

The Block Island Club will host the 39th Annual Harold Madison Yacht Race on Saturday, August 20.The Madison Race is the club’s annual offshore event, featuring an around-the-buoys course off the west side of the island. Any boat is welcome to enter, and PHRF handicapping will be used. It is expected there will be two divisions on the primary course, spinnaker and non-spinnaker.If three or more dinghy sailors express interest, there were will a separate start and course for them.Sailors should gather at the club, off Corn Neck Road, for the skippers’ meeting at 10 a.m. on race day to get the course and racing instructions. The start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., just north or south of the channel to the Great Salt Pond, depending on wind direction.The top three finishers in each class will receive trophies at the after-party following the race on the club grounds. The overall winner receives the perpetual Harold and Virginia Madison Cup, named for founding members of the club who helped lay the foundations of its sailing program.Registrations are accepted up to the skippers’ meeting on race day.
