Block Island comes home with big win

The score, the opponent, the results, leap off the page. The Block Island Hurricanes Varsity girls basketball team traveled overnight last week to play Hope High School in Providence and came away with a 43-18 thrashing of the home team.Hope has 1,000 students enrolled in its high school versus Block island’s just over 40.Ping-pong those odds around one’s head for perspective on the accomplishment on Hope’s home court. The Hurricanes’ spunk, and the team’s methodical approach in flawlessly executing plays, time and time again, left Hope increasingly frustrated.Led by senior Chloe Weber’s 17 points, and complemented by tough to defend even scoring from Cally Weber (6 points), Rory Crawford (6 points), and Cora Ryan (6 points), the Hurricanes scored right from the opening whistle while shutting down Hope’s offense. Making the win all that more significant is seven of the Canes’ games in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League have been cancelled due to Covid or weather, so they have not had time together to really gel. The girls are fun to watch as they do not have an arrogant attitude, but rather enjoy playing together and trust their teammates, often making an extra pass for a wide open shot.
