Block Island Cookie Company opens

Lauri McTeague started baking cookies for her students at the Block Island School and that gesture, over time, has evolved into her newest venture: the Block Island Cookie Company, located at the Block Island Maritime Institute in New Harbor. The cookies are fresh; the aroma can be enjoyed walking up Ocean Avenue even with everything else going on there.
The name of McTeague’s company is a little misleading: she sells breakfast sandwiches all day long, and beverages, but the cookies are her specialty. She bakes the cookies in small batches, and sticks to the favorites, such as chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and lemon sugar cookies. But, she says, “We’ll take orders. We’ll make anything people want.”
If anyone orders some cookies and they can’t pick them up during business hours, they can get them at Smitty’s, the ice cream parlor next door, which is run by her sons.
New Harbor itself she finds convenient. There’s parking there, and the new dinghy dock is expected to bring even more traffic in from the pond.
She has ambitions for the company. McTeague would like to maybe do some outdoor table service, add new menu items. But right now she’s building a small team, incorporating her employees’ ideas into the business. Her lunch menu is starting small, but it comes with an added bonus: a cookie for dessert.
“I’m just excited that things are going well,” she said. “We’ll evolve and listen to people and see what they want.”
