Book Group to start new novel

The Senior Advisory Committee has announced that it will be starting discussion of a new book on Wednesday, Feb. 17 for its weekly Book Group meetings held over Zoom. For the coming weeks, the Book Group’s selection is Amy Tan’s “The Kitchen God’s Wife.”
Book Group has changed from its once-a-month discussion of a preselected book to a more in-depth exploration. It has, in the time of Covid-19 and Zoom, become more akin to taking a college literature course – and of course, the leader of book group is no other than Gloria Redlich, a retired college literature professor.
“The Kitchen God’s Wife” fits into this year’s theme of “a clash of cultures driven by endemic hatreds – particularly minorities suffering persecution at the hands of majority groups.” The previous book was “Antelope Woman” by Louise Erdich.
Redlich suggests that for the first session, readers complete the first 80 or so pages – or until the closest chapter ending. With a book by Tan, this shouldn’t be a daunting task. Readers of Tan’s first novel, “The Joy Luck Club” most likely found themselves flying through the pages, unable to put it down.
