Council says no to weekend hunting

As expected, there was a solid turnout for the discussions about hunting at the Town Council’s meeting on February 21. One of the discussions was whether there should be shotgun hunting on the weekend of January 11 and 12, 2025, the other was to discuss and act on firearms hunting at the Block Island Wildlife Refuge. There were strong feelings about both subjects.At the outset of the discussion, Town Manager Maryanne Crawford gave a report on the number of deer harvested during the season that just ended in mid-February, just before school vacation. The numbers were obtained from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. “Some of the numbers may change slightly,” she said.Crawford reported that in all, 394 deer were harvested – the largest harvest in some time, she said. Of those, about 250 were taken by just three Block Island hunters.
