The Block Island Hurricanes girls volleyball team played a tough match in front of their home crowd on Saturday, ultimately losing to the Tolman High School Tigers three games to one.The Hurricanes got off to a slow start, losing the first game 25 to 16 in pretty short order. The second game started to get away from the island girls as well, as they fell behind 8 to 3 early, prompting Coach Rob Martin to call a timeout.But with strong words of encouragement from Coach Ben Foster and shouts and cheers from the home crowd, the ‘Canes came roaring back in game two. Campbell Coviello nailed four serves in a row to start the rally, and Amira Wilson’s spike past the Tolman defender tied the game up at 17. Wilson had several heavy-handed spikes in game two, with one ball careening off a defender and being lost under the bleachers, bringing the score to 22 all. A spike by Haley Conant tiedthe game again at 24.The two teams continued to trade points, with neither squad able to pull ahead by the requisite two points to end the game.
