The Town Council has unanimously approved the issuance of an $8 million bond for the long-awaited island-wide broadband network.
“[This project was] a combination of months and years of hard work on the part of many people in town, to get this through and done,” said First Warden Ken Lacoste. “We said this before — we commend everyone who has worked on this. We look forward to it and this is one step towards that goal.”
Lacoste said the council had received the resolution concerning the funding from Town Finance Director Amy Land, who was also a key player in the broadband project.
“We are excited to bring this to the market,” said Land.
Lacoste made a motion “to sign a resolution of the Town of New Shoreham approving the issuance of bonds and/or notes in an amount not to exceed $8,000,000 for financing, engineering, construction, equipping, deployment and initial operation of a municipal broadband network for Block Island.”
The motion was seconded by Councilor Chris Willi. The council voted 4-0. Second Warden André Boudreau was absent.
