Block Island Varsity Volleyball extended its winning streak to six games on Sunday in front of a raucous and lively home crowd. The Hurricanes defeated the Juanita Sanchez Complex Cavaliers to bring their record on the year to 8-7, with a strong chance to make the playoffs. It was a sweet bit of revenge for the girls from Block Island, as the Cavaliers had defeated the Hurricanes when they met on October 13.
The Hurricanes opened the match on October 24 strong, coming out fast and winning the first game 25-7. The Cavaliers settled themselves down in the second game, however, and squeezed out a 25-21 win.
The third game started slowly, with the two teams trading points to a score of 6-6. With the score tied, Cora Ryan stepped up to serve, and sent an ace past the Cavaliers that brought the crowd to life. A strong block by Rory Crawford brought the score to 9-6 in favor of the Hurricanes and prompted Juanita Sanchez to call a timeout.The Cavaliers finally broke serve after the timeout, but the Hurricanes immediately got the serve back, which brought Amira Wilson to the line.
