Lady Hurricanes win home opener

Block Island School hosted Scituate High School in the Hurricanes’ first home volleyball match on Saturday, and it came right down to the wire.The Lady Hurricanes won the first game handily, 25 to 18 and looked on their way to a quick victory. With powerful jump serves by Amira Wilson, several blocks by Rory Crawford and Bailey Payne, and tenacious defense by libaro Campbell Coviello, the ‘Canes dominated early. Setter Callie Weber put the ball in the perfect spot for Wilson, Payne, and Crawford to deliver spike after spike, overwhelming the Scituate defenders.The second game was closer, with Block Island squeezing out a two point victory in front of the packed stands. This was the first indoor high school sporting event open to the public since the Covid pandemic swept the country, and Block Islanders came out in force to support theladies’ volleyball team.The team consists of 14 girls, which is close to three quarters of the female high school population. The rest of the school seemed to be in attendance, along with representatives of most families on the island.
The third game was also tight, this time with Scituate earning a two-point victory.The visitors rode their momentum
