The following update was provided by Block Island Medical Director Dr. Tom Warcup on Sunday, Aug. 23:
“Block Island has now had nine cases. Our most recent positive was quickly identified. We have coordinated with the Department of Health and there are no concerns for contact tracing on the island,” said Warcup.
Warcup also announced that in the past 14 days, Covid-19 cases in the U.S. have decreased by 17 percent, and deaths have reduced by three percent. The risk for catching COVID-19 is more likely for individuals who are together indoors compared to being outside.
“We have a 19-time greater risk of contracting the virus indoors than outdoors,” added Warcup, encouraging individuals “to get outside and enjoy our island.”
Warcup also said that Rhode Island has a low infection rate.
“We are at a 3 percent positive rate, which is under the 5 percent positive rate that is targeted by the Center for Disease Control,” said Warcup.
