Monday was picture-perfect for the annual Double Ender Celebrations’ Fourth of July Parade. This year’s theme was “Celebrate Block Island,” and people did with costumes representing everything from the Block Island quarter featuring the North Light to what could be called Block Island’s official beverage – the mudslide. In the family category, the Hallberg family in their white truck with a “BI 1” buoy – took grand prize with the theme “We Luv Block Island.” In the business category, it was Old Island Pub with their grandprize-winning “Celebrating Block Island Year-round” float, where almost every holiday celebrated on Block Island was represented. The parade started with fire engines, as it always does, followed by the grand marshal, this year Martha Ball. Last in line was the Captain Nick’s float with musician Marc Scortino, who played a wailing Jimi Hendrix-styled “Star Spangled Banner” as the float rounded the bend at the National.Special thanks to all the folks who made it happen, all those who participated, and tophotographers Malcolm Greenaway, Robin Langsdorf, and Steve Miller who so beautifully captured the spirit of the day.
