Raimondo pushes school opening to Sept. 14

Gov. Gina Raimondo announced on Wednesday, Aug. 12 that she was pushing back the start of Rhode Island school openings to Monday, Sept. 14. The original start date was set for Monday, Aug. 31.
The Block Island Times spoke with Block Island School Principal Kristine Monje and Supt. Mike Convery to hear their thoughts on the school’s reopening. Both Monje and Convery felt that a hybrid approach would work best, at least at first.
“I sent out an email to the parents and staff reiterating what the governor [Gina Raimondo] is saying. It could be a hybrid approach: some kids at homes and some live,” said Monje.
Convery thought it was a good idea “to put off going back until we are more ready. We have been meeting weekly for the last month and a half with teachers in school and discussing things online since our plan was submitted in July. We are still working out logistical details of returning to school. We are turning our focus to online learning. I think that is the way to go, at least a hybrid, with the increasing [COVID-19] numbers we are seeing in the schools. I can’t say that there
