The Block Island Medical Center, built in 1989, is seeking to expand the facility with a two-story wing to the existing building, and a second-floor addition above the existing clinical wing. The two-story addition will contain a new clinical wing on the first floor and residential area on the second floor, which will tie in with the new second floor addition. The residential area will provide four bedrooms of communal housing for visiting students and medical residents, and a separate apartment for visiting specialists. The Medical Center’s rural medicine program includes nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students, medical students from Brown University, and residents from all over the country.
“It is gratifying that more and more islanders are seeking care from the Medical Center,” said Dr. Tom Warcup. “Our primary care visits are up and there is a waiting list for physical therapy. Between that demand and providing urgent care, this expansion is critical.”
The new additions and renovated clinical wings will provide two acute care rooms, four primary care rooms, a central care team area, a new physical therapy treatment space, new and redesigned spaces for telehealth, behavioral health, dentistry, x-ray, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, and a lab.
