School agrees to Gay-Straight Alliance for students

The Block Island School has agreed to allow students to form a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). There has been confusion and miscommunication in the past about whether students could form the group or not, with health teacher Victoria Carson telling The Times last year that the studentcouncil had agreed to form a group in 2017. The group never actually formed, though.At that time, there was also interest in forming a similar group at the Island Free Library, and in a recent interview Principal Kristine Monje told The Times that the school decided not to form the group in 2017 since there would be one at the library. The library group never formed either, having been advised by the school that a GSA was forming at the school. The question of a GSA came up again during the 2019-2020 school year, and the students making the request were denied outright by the school administration.For its part, the library has remained an ally to the LGBTQ community.
