Seeding the pond

On what Harbormaster Steve Land described as ”a sunny, fun day,” 34,000 clams were deposited from a boat into the Great Salt Pond as part of the New Shoreham Harbors Department’s and the Shellfish Commission’s joint annual restocking effort.
Land told The Block Island Times that resident Jon Grant donated his boat for the endeavor, which was loaded with bags of  shellfish on Saturday morning, May 5 at Payne’s Dock. Land said he was thankful to Cliff Payne for use of his dock, and noted that the restocking is called “seeding the pond,” which is an annual exercise funded through the Harbors Department’s budget.
“Clamming is an incredibly popular activity for summer tourists on the island,” said Land, who lauded Shellfish Manager Nancy Ziomek and the Shellfish Commission’s efforts in seeding the pond.
