Shad Bloom 2021 a success

For over a quarter of a century runners have descended on Block Island to participate in spring’s Shad Bloom 10K trail race, a bucolic run by lakes, paths, and roads coursing through some of the island’s most beautiful settings.“This year’s race featured 157 registered runners in age groups ascending to an inspiring 70 to 75 years- of-age,” said race coordinator and Recreation Department head David Sniffen. Runners participating were registered from as far away as New York City, McLean, VA, Washington DC, and San Diego, CA.With no injuries reported and all runners accounted for, the always affable Sniffen was “very pleased for the runners. They look forward to this annual event and after a hiatus of a year due to Covid restrictions they are really happy to be out here, even if it’s a distanced social setting of sorts.”Block Island top female and male resident finishers were Krista Vila (20th at 47:01) and Josh Redd (35th at 53:15, just beating out Ray Reynolds by 40 seconds), while Matt Walker of Westerly took overall first place with a time of just 35:28.But the whoa, holy Toledo impressive award has to go to Block Island’s Rick Vila at the young
