The Spring Street Gallery kicks off its 2018 season with the Block Island Student Show.
The gallery and the student artists welcome the community to view their diverse collection of artistic creations at the opening reception on Wednesday, May 23 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Guided by art teacher Lisa Robb, the local high school students worked tremendously hard and this exhibition showcases their resulting talent. These exquisite pieces include a variety of ceramics, drawings, mixed media collages, and paintings.  You will see works created throughout the school year, either prompted by assigned artistic challenges or created independently beyond the classroom.
Evalene Deane, senior at the school and the only Drawing I student, had a unique opportunity to focus her creative attention on content that would align with her senior project: the art of taxidermy. Most of her projects related in some way to anatomy, animal texture, and nature. Deane explored a variety of drawing media while learning to recreate flora and fauna.
Twelve students participated in this year’s ceramics courses. Each honed their skill as they developed their own personal style. As they progressed throughout the year, they explored hand-building techniques, produced a range of wheel-thrown vessels and experimented with glazes and decorative techniques. They are excited for the opportunity to share what they have learned beside the chili-fest bowls sold this past March.
The students’ work will be displayed through Sunday, June 3. Many of the students’ work will be available for purchase. This is a first-time opportunity for many of the students to learn about art marketing, sales, and curating a show.
Picasso once said that “every child is an artist” and the students at the Block Island School have proven this to be true.
