The Block Island High School Varsity Soccer team made a go of it this past fall, attempting (perhaps too optimistically) to have some normality in the school year so badly affected by the coronavirus. The Rhode Island Interscholastic League set up a seven team division with six games, and playoffs, scheduled. Despite weather-related boat cancellations and incidences of Covid at other schools, the Hurricanes did manage to play four games, both home and away, before the coronavirus forced a halt.
Ultimately, the team acquitted itself very well against schools with much larger populations and older players, with no other co-ed teams. Five of our players were freshman and only 14 students were on the roster. In games there was total commitment to hard work and fair play throughout each match. In fact the team was voted the winners of the Team Sportsmanship Award by the opposing coaches for their play this past season.
In addition to the 2020 RIIL Team Sportsmanship Award, the following players achieved recognition: First Team Award: Hector Munoz; Second Team Award: Daniel Cullen; Third Team Award: Caleb Butcher, and All Academic Award: Tim Connor.
Recognition for their dedication should go to the freshmen players
