A work in progress – behind the scenes at the medical center

They’re going great guns on construction at the Block Island Medical Center – nail guns that is. But during a pause in the hammering, Medical Director Tom Warcup and Board Chair Susan Stover gave The Block Island Times a tour of the work in progress.In the medical center’s main building, most of the construction is concentrated on the first floor and the basement level. Rooms and offices have been framed up, foam insulation applied to exterior walls, and wiring and plumbing stumps installed, while dozens of sheets of drywall are stacked in a corner and almost ready for hanging.The lower level, or basement area will include a new dental suite with a dedicated waiting room. Right now, the upstairs dental suite is still in use, but it will eventually become an area for mental health services, with space for behavioral health and counseling and a separate area for telemedicine. Dr. Warcup said they were trying to “pull it out of the basement – both literally and figuratively.”Still, a new entrance in the rear will provide additional privacy, and a new, handicapped accessible elevator will provide
