Annenberg Update from the Historical Society, images from 1954 Hurricane Carol

A quick update for the month of August on the Historical Society’s digitalization campaign funded by the Annenberg Foundation. We have just successfully crossed over 2,000 entries related to the history of Block Island. This includes an amazing collection of photographs donated from the estate of Kathryn Champlin. This collection includes some incredible images of the Great Salt Pond during Hurricane Carol in the summer of 1954. This Category3 Hurricane did an incredible amount of damage, which nationally equated to over $450 million (1954 USD). These two images show the dock at Champlin’s Marina underwater and the ferry vessel M.V. Yankee riding out thestorm.
