Block Island switches Senate districts

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee signed legislation last week to reapportion the state’s house and senate districts for the next ten years. The Rhode Island General Assembly passed the legislation a couple of days before sending it to the governor to sign. Beginning with the election this coming November, Block Island will be changing from Senate District 37 to Senate District 36. Senator V. Susan Sosnowski, who represents Senate District 37, will continue to represent Block Island for the current legislative session, which runs through June 30. District 36 is currently represented by Senator Alana M. DiMario.The state constitution calls for the General Assembly to reapportion its house and senate districts, as well as the two federal congressional districts after each 10-year federal census. With a slight increase in population over the last decade, Rhode Island will retain both of its U.S. Congressional seats.
