Council endorses Pride Weekend

The New Shoreham Town Council voted unanimously on Monday night, September 13, to pass a resolution in support of Block Island LGBTQ+ Pride Weekend. The resolution described the island’s citizens’ denunciation of prejudice and praised the “cultural, civic, and economic contributions of the LGBTQ+ community which strengthen our social welfare.”“This council seeks to affirm that the town and all residents of New Shoreham should recognize, value, and maintain an inclusive environment with members of the LGBTQ+ community, their families and families of all compositions, whether they call New Shoreham home or are visiting, and cultivate New Shoreham’s reputation as a safe harbor for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their families,” the resolution continued.
The resolution announced that the “New Shoreham Town Council officially recognizes, supports, and joyously celebrates “Block Island Pride” and urges residents to recognize and celebrate the contributions made by members of the LGBTQ+ community and to actively promote the principles of equality, liberty, and justice and individual freedom.”The resolution further directed the Town Manager to raise the Pride Flag at Town Hall during the celebrations from September 16 to September 19.
