Council stalls on July 4th problems, progresses on housing

The New Shoreham Town Council had a lengthy agenda for its meeting on Monday, July 11 with most of the items continued from the previous meeting on July 5.When they got to item three, an update from Interim Police Chief Peter Chabot regarding the Fourth of July weekend, first Warden André Boudreau said: “We are not going to discuss this, this evening. There are no updates on the topic.”Still, Councilor Keith Stover wanted to at least keep the matter on the table. “I was going to ask that we schedule a show cause hearing for Ballard’s,” he said. “We’ve all heard how out of control that place has been.”“This is why we’re not going to discuss item three this evening,” said Boudreau. “The police have an active investigation going on right now. We don’t have facts.”Some of the same types of problems that plagued the holiday weekend have continued to occur, such as people drinking alcohol on the streets. Town Manager Maryanne Crawford told The Block Island Times that she has personally observed people walking between New and Old Harbors carrying alcoholic drinks.
