Due to unusually high visitation, hunting delayed at B.I. National Wildlife Refuge

The following was submitted by The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Thursday, Oct. 29:
will delay firearms hunting at Block Island National Wildlife Refuge until Dec. 1, 2020 in the Sandy Point and Beane Point Units.  Currently, archery white-tailed deer hunting opportunities are available at all Block Island refuge hunting units with a signed refuge brochure. Firearms hunting will be allowed during the established waterfowl season at Wash Pond Unit, which includes Nov. 25 – 29, and Dec. 5 – Jan. 24, 2021.   
Block Island NWR is experiencing higher than normal visitation this season. In an abundance of caution, additional signs will be installed to alert visitors to hunting activities, and encourage visitors to wear fluorescent orange hat or vest. Delaying the use of firearms in the Sandy Point and Beane Point Units will help ensure public safety.  
All hunters are encouraged to check in with the Town of New Shoreham Police Department prior to hunting. Hunters must download, sign, and carry a refuge hunting brochure for each season to serve as written permission to access refuge units for hunting. These hunting brochures, as well as
