Claiming that she was unlawfully terminated from her position at the Block Island Medical Center, Liz Dyer, a nurse practitioner, has filed a lawsuit against the Medical Center.
The lawsuit, which was filed in Superior Court in March, states that Dyer is “seeking injunctive relief, attorney’s fees and litigation expenses and other equitable relief, including back pay, as well as compensatory damages to remedy the unlawful discrimination in employment the Plaintiff suffered in violation of the Rhode Island Whistleblowers’ Protection Act.” Dyer is asking for a jury trial.
The attorney for the Medical Center, Neal McNamara of the law firm Nixon Peabody, said to The Block Island Times, “that the complaint contains numerous false allegations. We are confident in our position, and we will vigorously defend B.I. Health Services.”
The lawsuit details a number of alleged incidents between staff, along with email correspondence, staff resignations, including [former Medical Director] Dr. Mark Clark’s own resignation, and the perceived “hostile environment” within the Medical Center.
The lawsuit states that Dyer and “several other defendant BIHS staff members” wanted to discuss these issues in a “group meeting” on May 21, 2019 and in a separate meeting scheduled for May 27, 2019.
