Girls’ volleyball wrapping up season

The Block Island girls’ high school volleyball team finds itself in ‘waiting mode’ as the final matches of the season windup and the playoffs begin to take shape. And based on how they cover the floor, this is not a team that is used to waiting for anything.Currently the Hurricanes find themselves in third place at 6-2, right behind St. Raphael’s Academy and Rogers High School, teams that beat the talented ladies earlier in the year on their home courts. Due to Covid restrictions, the number of matches has been dramatically cut this year from last year’s 19 games when the Hurricanes won a record 17 contests.Just as this week’s edition of The Block Island Times was going to press, the girls volleyball team secured a seed in the R.I. Interscholastic League playoffs with a 3-0 win at Westerly High School. The Hurricanes dominated the Bulldogs on offense with a variety of serving styles that clearly confused the Bulldogs.The League will announce pairings for the play offs on Friday, and due to the Hurricanes’ expected high seed, they may get to host a game on the island early in the week.The team is led by seniors Savannah Brown,
