Medical Center and NAMI-BI team up for Fun Run

Race Week on Block Island connotes more than June sailboats to many people, as Saturday saw the culmination of the “fittest” islanders competing in the annual Triathlon and then later in the day, the 5K Fun Run on the beach. This was a fundraiser for the Block Island Medical Center and the National Alliance on Mental Illness Block Island affiliate.Both events were a huge success and included families and individual competitors determined to win, absorbing some adrenaline from the Olympic Games excitement that have fed their competitive juices nightly.None more so than Caleb Draal age nine of Smithfield who came in an astounding fifth in the NAMI Fun Run with a grin that could light up the night sky. Told at the finish line by one of the judges that he just might want to focus on running, he smiled and said, “yea, I think I might have a future in this.”First place in the run was captured by uber-fit Community Service Officer Domenic Savastano of Nichols College, who heads back to school on the twentieth of the month.
