‘Stuff the Cruiser’ a huge success

Officer Doug Borden had a crazy idea, and he has many, always delivered with a mischievous smile.Whether it’s greeting the ferry passengers as they disembark with song, dog biscuits for furry friends, or dancing ‘a welcome’ to the island.This idea was different and was spawned from his years with the East Providence Police force where he served as Community Resource Officer in the schools. Why not park one of the police cruisers outside the Block Island Grocery and see if islanders’ generosity could provide food to help some families through the next few weeks? After all, not all families get to travel off-island and budgets are tight. Idea spawned.Well, the results were extraordinary.“We had to get a second cruiser,” said Borden. “It was a wonderful success. We got more food than we thought we were going to get. Islanders showed tremendous heart and it made for a great day.”“The food will be donated to the Helping Hands Pantry to bolster their supply of goods for the cold winter months. Odd Fellows Café donated some $75.00 worth of gift cards for us to distribute to families experiencing incidents where food can make a difference in a stressful day.”Typical of
