Town budget season underway

The fiscal year 2024 budget for the Town of New Shoreham was unveiled last week on March 15 and presented to the Town Council by Town Manager Maryanne Crawford and Finance Director Amy Land.Crawford opened by saying that the 2024 budget shows a continuation of projects that began during this fiscal year, 2023, which ends on June 30.As envisioned in the 2023 fiscal year, the town has added three positions – a part-time young-adult librarian, a full-time human services director, and a full-time human resources director. “We are in the process of filling those positions,” said Crawford.The proposed budget also includes a “bump up” for facilities maintenance to $100,000 from $60,000. Crawford said the request for that line was $150,000, “But we just couldn’t do that this year,” adding, “We’re finally able to address some things and I don’t feel we’re behind the eight ball.”As far as the capital budget, Crawford said that as the town wraps up the broadband project, there were significant other capital improvements to address in the next couple of years.
