Update from Dr. Warcup

The following update was posted by the Block Island Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 4:
Dr. Warcup met with the Rescue Squad last night to discuss the status of vaccination for COVID-19.

Key points:
-BIHS is working with RIDOH to become a Vaccination Site which will qualify us to receive vaccines first for first responders, high risk patients and eventually the general public.
-The State hopes to have vaccines arriving in mid-December and will begin distribution accordingly
-It is not clear yet which vaccine we will receive
-Vaccination for the general population should begin by the 2nd quarter of 2021
-About 40% of people experience flu-like symptoms for 48 hours post vaccination
-Additional data will be available once the vaccine is approved by ACIP
-Dr. Warcup will post additional information as soon as it is available
-CDC has modified quarantine guidelines to 10 days for those who have been in contact with a known positive.
-If you suspect you have been exposed, please stay home for 10 days and monitor your helath.
