Harbors Committee looks at mooring waiting lists

The Harbors Committee had a long discussion on private moorings on October 21, and specifically, the long waiting list for those moorings.The topic was generated by a letter from Greg Demos, who recently bought a house on the island and subsequently signed up on the waiting list for a mooring. He became disheartened when he did the math, and realized he might be 163-years-old by the time he makes his way to the top of the waiting list. Demos sent a letter to the Harbors Committee and attended the committee’s meeting to state his case.
“As it stands, it’s not a legitimate opportunity to get a mooring,” Demos told the committee, calling it “an inappropriate wait time.”The Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council sets the number of moorings at 290 for Block Island. Harbors Department Administrative Assistant Hillary Stewart confirmed to The Times that there are currently 225 residents on the waiting list, and 463 non-residents. Harbormaster Kate McConville explained to the committee that the Harbors Department uses a 3 to 1 ratio when allocating new applicants for available moorings; three available moorings go to residents while one goes to a non-resident.
