John Warfel and Eileen Miller

Painter Eileen Miller and ceramic artist John Warfel will combine their work again this summer at The Spring Street Gallery, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is cordially invited.
Miller’s abstract oil paintings feature splashes of color and a build-up of texture to create a fresh perspective with a foundation in the natural world.
“Like many of us, walking and taking in the sights on the island is a daily pasttime and delight,” said Miller. “My paintings attempt to capture how it feels when we see the red dash of a cardinal, the moving glint of light on the ocean, or the mixed hues of waving field grass. Abstract expressionism allows me to convey these universal impressions and feelings freely from a more personal and intuitive side.”
Warfel said his new work reflects an interest in new textures and colors.
“This year I’ve been experimenting using engobes” — colored slips — “in both the Raku and pit-firing process. I have been adding different textures, sometimes distorting the thrown form, and sometimes carving in relief,” Warfel said. “I like the way Raku and pit-firing respond to different textures. As with many things the journey is as important as the product.”
Miller and Warfel’s show will be on display through Sunday, July 22.
