Newly minted Eagle Scout

Block Island School senior André Miller became just the second island Scout to reach the rank of Eagle in the past 50 years. In 1969, David Lewis reached that rank. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor, which was at turns both moving and informative, was held on Sunday, May 20 at the Harbor Church. The ceremony was emceed by Troop 30 Scoutmaster Kate Butcher and Scout Mac Brown. Eagle Scout John Breunig, currently the Superintendent of the Block Island Water Company, spoke of the significance of the honor, and Miller received letters of commendation from Scouting organizations and other Eagle Scouts. State Rep. Blake Filippi presented Miller with a citation from the House of Representatives. Eagle Scout Miller also presented Eagle Scout mentor pins to Landscape Architect Derek van Lent, who assisted Miller on his Eagle Scout project — a reflection garden that is located on the front lawn of the Harbor Church — and to Grant Van Eck of the Boy Scouts of America Narragansett Council. Near the end of the ceremony, Miller presented a plaque, which will be placed at the reflection garden, in honor of former Troop 30 leader Bernadette McNerney, who passed away in 2016. — Lars Trodson
