Transformation

The Block Island Power Company is making steady progress on its voltage conversion project thanks to the help of crews from subcontractor Three Phase Line Construction. The above pictures were taken on Connecticut Avenue where three old transformers (pictured at left) were replaced with new ones on a recently installed, higher pole. The work to transfer all the electric lines was performed on Friday, February 18, right after the rain from the previous night’s storm subsided. The voltage conversion project will take several years to complete, but the first, most expansive phase will be completed this year. The project will convert the distribution system from an old, obsolete Delta system to a more modern Wye system and double the electric capacity of the island’s distribution system, reduce line loss, and alleviate the need for an expensive back-up transformer for the substation at BIPCo.(Photos: R.
