Wickford outscores lady ‘Canes

The Block Island School Junior Varsity Softball Team wrapped up their season on Friday, June 1, versus Wickford Middle School. In a standing tradition, our competition with Wickford is always friendly, as both teams use this game as a learning experience and a trial period for young players.
Eighth grader Rory Crawford took the mound for the Hurricanes, and had a great showing for her third-ever game pitched. Sixth grader Cora Ryan took an inning on the mound in the fifth and showed a lot of promise for future softball seasons. The other half of any great pitcher is her batterymate, the catcher. Sixth grader Bailey Payne stepped up to the challenge when the team was in need of a strong presence behind the plate. Her speed and tenacity will prove to be an asset for her as she develops her skills in future seasons.
The young Lady ‘Canes had great showings at the plate throughout all seven innings.
Chloe Weber and Rory Crawford both drilled line drives to the outfield to each earn a double. Payne also picked up a single, dropping in a hit on the grass just out of the reach of the Wickford shortstop. All other Hurricanes safely reached base throughout the game: Cally Weber, Nancy Reyes, Whitney McGinnes, Amira Veldman-Wilson, Campbell Coviello, and Celeste Connell put their knowledge of the game and hustle to work to be a force to be reckoned with on the bases. The Hurricanes put together 19 runs throughout the game, but fell short to the depth of the Wickford lineup.
The girls all improved exponentially throughout the season and will return to the diamond next spring.
