Tiger takedown

On Sunday, May 20, the Varsity Hurricanes softball team snuffed the Tiverton Tigers for the first time in many seasons.
In a captivating 2-1 win, the Lady ‘Canes battled back in the sixth inning to secure the win. The Tigers scored an unearned run in the second inning and struggled to cross home plate for the remainder of the game. Savannah Brown started the rally for the Hurricanes in the bottom of the sixth inning, with a leadoff walk. Stephanie Rich stepped in as a pinch runner for Brown. Using her speed to her advantage, she stole second on the first pitch to Charlotte Hall. Hall advanced Rich to third on a groundout to second base. Julia Gasner stepped up to the plate and picked the RBI to score Rich on a fielder’s choice groundout.
With a tie ballgame and two outs, Mikhaela Brown-Padien laced a double to center field. Next in the offensive attack was Ruby Crawford, who drove a long single to left field and scored Brown-Padien from second base. With a score of 2-1, the Hurricanes defense needed to stay strong for three more outs. The Tiverton Tigers managed to put two runners on base, but stellar pitching from Gasner caused the batters to hit pop-ups to Fiona Crawford, Mary Conant, and Moira O’Neill.
The win over Tiverton secured a regular season second place finish for the Hurricanes and sets them up for success in the playoffs.
There will be a playoff home game on May 28 or May 29.
